GED-655 Diagnosis and Correction: Elementary and Adolescent Literacy
This course will provide candidates who are completing their advanced reading specialist certifications with the skills to perform assessment-driven and responsive intervention practices for elementary through adolescent learners. Candidates will advance their assessment, diagnostic, and intervention skills in the field of literacy instruction, viewing themselves as a critical element in a fair and equitable assessment process. This course includes a systematic study of proper techniques as well as the selection, administration and interpretation of formal and informal instruments used to assess a variety of literacy components that have been identified as essential in evidence-based best practices for elementary and adolescent learners. Students will learn to analyze results and use that information to create individualized plans to enhance literacy intervention. There will be a focus on screening for dyslexia and dysgraphia and accommodations to support student success. The course focuses on assessment techniques that evaluate the learner from an asset perspective leading to increased success in language and literacy skills. Throughout this course, candidates will partake in 30 hours of clinical experience and work with students to create a clinical case study to demonstrate fair and equitable assessment practices and interventions as they learn the importance of incorporating multiple stakeholders (parents, teachers, administrators, etc.) within the assessment and intervention process.
