Grading Policy for Graduate Studies
Students enrolled in a graduate degree program—master’s or doctoral—must maintain good academic standing to continue in their respective program of study. Graduate students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to remain in good standing and to qualify for graduation.
Each graduate program may have additional academic standing and grading policies listed in its departmental section of the catalog.
Course Repeat Policy
Graduate students are permitted to repeat one course, one time during their program. The following guidelines apply:
- Eligible Grades: A course may be repeated if the student earned a grade of C+, C, C-, or F.
- F Grades and Dismissal: A grade of F will result in immediate dismissal from the graduate program. However, the student may submit an appeal for readmission. If the appeal is approved, the student must repeat the course in which the F was earned as a condition of reinstatement.
- Grade Replacement: When a course is repeated under this policy, only the second grade will be used in calculating the student’s cumulative GPA, regardless of whether the second grade is higher, lower, or the same as the original.
- Transcript Notation: Both the original and repeated grades will appear on the student's official and unofficial transcripts. Credit hours for the course will only be counted once toward degree completion.
- Approval Process: Prior approval from the Program Director is required before repeating any course.
- Financial Aid: Students should consult with the Financial Aid Office, as federal regulations may limit funding to only one repeat of a previously passed course.
Other Considerations
- Courses repeated at another institution will not replace the grade earned at Centenary. The original Centenary grade will remain part of the student's cumulative GPA.
- Courses designated as repeatable for credit (e.g., internships, independent studies, practicum, or fieldwork) are not subject to this policy and may be repeated in accordance with program guidelines.
