EST-2015 Introduction to Equine-Assisted Services
This 2-credit course is designed with a variety of student backgrounds in mind: social work, psychology, special education and equine studies. The field of Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) is growing in recognition and popularity nationally and internationally. Future mental health, equine and special education professionals benefit by becoming aware of the theory, practice and research results of the main elements of EAS: equine assisted learning, therapeutic riding; psychotherapy incorporating equine activities; and physical, occupational or speech therapy that incorporates the movement of the horse (hippotherapy). Content will be a mix of studying the theoretical basis behind the various types of EAS and taking part in equine-assisted learning exercises and role plays. The implications of these experiences for various types of clients will be explored in depth.
