Overview

Program Description

The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts degree allows students to explore a range of subject areas including writing, public speaking, social sciences, mathematics and wellness. To earn the Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts degree, graduates must successfully complete 60 credit hours, consisting of the 40-credit University Core and 20 elective credits. This degree also prepares students who are working toward a bachelor’s degree program.

The Bachelor of Arts program in Individualized Studies is designed to meet the needs of those students who desire greater breadth of study in the arts or sciences, or combination of areas of study. An “individualized program” also may be designed to accommodate the student who wants to combine liberal arts with a career program or who desires an interdisciplinary program. The advantage of this program is its adaptability to the educational goals of the student. To qualify for the Individualized Studies degree, the student must develop a program of individualized study in consultation with their academic advisor as assigned by the Academic Success and Advising Center. Program requirements should be outlined for each semester of study similar to the way traditional degree programs are outlined in the University’s catalog. The Individualized Studies major requires a student to choose two designated areas of study.  An area of study can be any major or minor offered at Centenary University, as long as the areas of study can be met. The student must then complete the requirements as they have been outlined and approved. While a program of individualized study may be established at any point during the student’s first two years at Centenary, the program must be outlined prior to the beginning of the junior year, or in the case of a transfer student, at the beginning of their academic studies at Centenary. Any exemption to this policy must be approved by the Dean of Academic Success and Advising.

A student majoring in Individualized Studies must meet the following requirements: (1) the completion of all University core requirements; (2) the completion of four courses in each area of study with at least two of these courses being 3000-4000 level; (3) a maximum of half of each area of study may be transfer credit with a total of at least 8 Centenary University credits required in each area of study; (4) a total of at least 30 credits is required within the two areas of study; (5) courses in an area of study cannot be used to fulfill minor requirements or concentrations in another academic program.
