EST-1106 Introduction to Therapeutic Horsemanship

This course is designed to invite students of various disciplines, includng social work, psychology, special education, and equine studies, to learn about engaging with horses for therapeutic purposes.  Future professionals will benefit by becoming aware of the theory, practice, and research results of the main tenets of therapeutic horsemanship. The course gives special attention to programmatic modalities that cross disciplines and engage the horse, bringing broad relevance to the course content. This course has a hands-on element, emphasizing experiential learning.  Students will gain insights into the benefits and practicalities of therapeutic horsemanship by taking part in equine-assisted learning exercises and roleplays.  Students will deepen their understanding of populations frequently served, including individuals with diverse physical and cognitive disabilities, military veterans, and individuals with social-emotional special needs.
