HIS-3100 Public History
Public History is the study and practice of presenting history to the broader, non-academic community. Museums, monuments, and public performances and festivals based on past events are all examples of public history. The class operates on two fronts: first, studying the theoretical meanings and uses of public history, with a particular focus on examples in our own region. Second, students will do public history by creating displays meant for public display on campus or in the local community (such as public libraries or historical sites). The class will visit numerous such sites throughout northern New Jersey. Whereas most history courses are decidedly academic in focus, studying Public History helps students develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work in archives, libraries, and museums and serves as the basis for a professional track. Public History experience will also help students gain access to internships with historical organizations in our
area.
