Technical Competencies - Sociology

Observation

  • The ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate materials presented through demonstrations, presentations, lectures, field trips, field experiences and/or internships.

    Communication

  • Able to communicate through verbal and written means in an effective, efficient, and in a timely manner. Any use of a translator or intermediary is permitted as a conduit of information but cannot serve in an integrative or evaluative role.
  • demonstrate awareness of one’s own non-verbal communication and how it may be interpreted by others.

    Sensory

  • Students must possess motor and sensory capacity to perform activities required for the Sociology Program. They must be able to complete classroom activities or provide instruction for a proxy to complete the activity.

Students must be able to:

  • present information to the class using visual media aids.
  • participate in role-plays and simulations.

    Behavioral

  • Students must demonstrate maturity, respect, and tolerance required for collaborative teamwork and other professional and socio-cultural interactions.
  • Students must demonstrate emotional stability to function effectively under stress and to adapt to changing environments.

Notes:

  1. To earn a bachelor degree, all graduates must successfully complete 120 credit hours.
  2. Minimum of 30 credits must be taken at Centenary University.
  3. All graduates must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above.
  4. All graduates must have a minimum of 2.0 GPA in their major(s).
  5. Courses that are special topic listed in the title, typically ending with a 99, are repeatable. Courses are counted multiple times and do not replace grades of the previous special topic course.
  6. Credits can be shared between the core and the major, or between the core and a minor. But credits cannot be shared within the core: a particular course can count only once for the core.
  7. Students will be guided by the degree audit sheet in effect at the time they declare specific major(s).
  8. SOC4002 Research Methods is designated writing intensive and is to be taken (preferably) in either semester of the junior year and after MTH1500 is taken.
  9. Internships require a minimum of a 3.0 GPA or have approval from Academic Advisor and Department Chair. In order for internship credits to count under Sociology core or related requirements, Academic Advisor must approve.
