Academic Internships

Centenary University’s Academic Internship Program connects classroom learning with real-world experience through internships with businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies. Internships are encouraged and may lead to future employment opportunities.

To earn academic credit for an internship, students must:

  • Have a 2.5 GPA and at least 30 completed credits
  • Interview competitively for the position
  • Develop learning objectives with a faculty advisor
  • Complete academic work tied to the internship
  • Be enrolled during the internship term (fall, spring, or summer)

Students earn 1 credit per 37.5 internship hours, up to a maximum of 16 credits. Internships count toward a student’s course load; exceeding 18 total credits may result in an overload fee.

Internship Guidelines:

  • Internships must be pre-approved
  • Current full-time jobs may not count for credit
  • A maximum of 8 credits may be earned with the same employer
  • Interns may not be supervised by a relative
  • Students with conduct violations may be ineligible
  • Summer credits cannot be applied to other semesters
  • Students must be enrolled at Centenary during the internship

Application Process:

  1. Meet with the Career Development Center for internship guidance
  2. Consult your faculty advisor for approval and academic expectations
  3. Complete the internship registration form with your site supervisor and advisor
  4. Obtain department chair approval
  5. Submit all paperwork to the Career Development Center and register before starting

At the end of the internship, the employer submits an evaluation, which helps determine the student’s final grade. The Internship Coordinator may also conduct a site visit.

Non-credit internships are available, but students are not covered by university insurance for off-campus, non-credit experiences.
