Administrative withdrawal for excessive absences or non-participation
The administrative withdrawal policy exists to allow faculty to withdraw students who have never attended the course, stopped attending the course and/or have stopped completing homework, assignments, and tests in the course. The purpose of the policy is to withdraw the students who are not performing well nor making an attempt to be successful in the course.
After the first week of classes, students may be administratively withdrawn from a course by the instructor for excessive absences or non-participation. Excessive absences are defined as the following:
- 16-week courses - Missing 10 or more days of instruction throughout the semester due to unexcused absences or non-participation. Instructors may establish a more stringent definition of excessive absences for their courses.
- 8-week courses - Missing 5 or more days of instruction throughout the semester due to unexcused absences or non-participation. Instructors may establish a more stringent definition of excessive absences for their courses.
Before an instructor requests an administrative withdrawal, an attempt by the instructor should be made to contact the student and inform them they are at risk of being administratively withdrawn. Each request must be based on evidence such as course grade book or attendance in the SIS system. Administrative withdrawal is at the instructor's discretion and the instructor is not obligated to administratively withdraw a student from their course.
Reinstatement:
The student may appeal an administrative withdrawal to the Dean of the Academic Success Center within 48 hours of notification of the withdrawal. Any decision for reinstatement will be made in consultation with the instructor who shall consider the feasibility of completing all course requirements within the class time remaining.
