Program Description
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement program is a 5-course, 15-credit sequence designed to provide candidates with the ability to teach English as a Second Language. Candidates will:
- be introduced to the foundational theories and research of linguistics and the structure of English;
- explore current theories and research in second language acquisition and the role of language teaching in second language learning;
- learn how to assess language proficiency and provide effective instruction accordingly through research-based methodologies and strategies;
- be able to develop an English language learner’s literacy skills through both language instruction and content-area instruction;
- apply knowledge of the interconnectedness of language, culture, identity and education to deliver culturally responsive instruction and advocate for English language learners and their families in schools and communities;
- complete required fieldwork in the form of observations.
The ESL Endorsement Program at Centenary University will enable the students to meet the State requirements for the State of NJ ESL Endorsement (#1475). This certification enables candidates to teach ESL in the K – 12 setting.
For candidates working toward their Master of Education in Reading, they can take the ESL sequence seamlessly as credits toward that degree.
This program is offered in a blended format with courses delivered alternating weeks in traditional classroom and online settings.
Program Goals:
- Develop an understanding by applying theory/research to in-service training and coordination of instruction for students or groups of students who are English Language Learners.
- Learn the skills necessary to be able to utilize and recommend methods and materials to be used in school district’s ESL program and contribute to the evaluation of student progress and school policies.
- Advocate for English Language Learners in the school setting and their communities and create culturally inclusive learning spaces.
English as Second Language (ESL) Endorsement Code: 1475-: From the New Jersey Department of Education- Please note that the NJ Department of Education requires that the candidate has secured their standard teaching certificate to apply for this endorsement. It is also required that the candidate attain a rating of at least “Advanced Low” on the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPI) as administered by ACTFL. Candidates who pass the NJ department approved basic-skills test are exempt from taking the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).
Exit Requirements:
- B or better in all coursework
- 3.0 GPA
- Ratings of at least “Advanced Low” on the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) in English, as administered by ACTFL. Candidates who pass the department approved basic-skills test are exempt from taking the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).
