GED-634 Innovative Approaches in Literacy Instruction

This course approaches balanced literacy instruction by examining the foundational basis of research-based best practices from the cognitive, affective, and sociocultural perspectives. Participants will learn how to view literacy instruction through a developmental lens so they can address the needs of all learners. A significant focus will be on addressing the needs of our diverse learning populations, enabling students to hone in on techniques to teach English Language Learners and struggling readers in the elementary and content area settings.  Students will be provided with an in-depth review of identified critical components of literacy instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, and motivation). Students will also gain additional knowledge and competencies in the critical area of information literacy.
