GED-649 Literacy in the Content Areas

This course examines how to organize literacy instruction/programs (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and educational standards within the content areas (including science, social studies, mathematics, and the humanities).  There will be an in-depth investigation of the essential literacy strategies of comprehending and composing text.  Students will explore and examine authentic, adolescent literature as teaching tools serving as a vehicle for motivation and program development.  Students will additionally learn a variety of teaching techniques regarding how to instruct our English Language Learners in an inclusive setting.  Students will learn to recognize the importance of how valuing students' culture and creating positive teacher-student relationships impact the educational setting.  Within this course there is a strong focus on active learning through a variety of technologies.
